Funerals
The bagpipes are a way to pay tribute to anyone as their life is celebrated and they are laid to rest.
During the Service ~ To the Hearse ~ Procession to the Gravesite ~ Lament ~ Sample Tunes
During the Service
There might be a special song that you would like me to play during the service. It might be their favourite song, or one which reminds you of them. I'll make every effort to learn the tune.
Recessional to the Hearse
One of the most appropriate times for music during the service is when the pallbearers carry the casket from the chapel to the hearse. I recommend a slow march, usually a retreat, at this time. I will lead the casket out of the chapel, and continue playing as the hearse drives away. Examples include "Mist Covered Mountains" and "When the Battle's O'er"
To the gravesite
At the cemetery, I will lead the coffin to the grave. I find "Going Home" to be most suitable for this.
Lament
Either during the Minister's service or at its end, a lament will give the attendees an opportunity for grief and self-reflection. "Amazing Grace" is the most recognized tune. "Flowers of the Forest" is a traditional lament which is played at memorials and services around the world, and is especially appropriate for veterans.
